A man posing as a utility worker gained entry to a Michigan home by claiming to check for gas leaks and tied up the homeowner’s wife in a gruesome attack that resulted in the murder of the homeowner, Hussein Murray, 72. Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, has been arrested and charged with felony murder and unlawful imprisonment in connection with the incident. The second suspect remains at large. The suspects targeted the home, possibly due to prior knowledge of valuables or money inside, as the couple owned a jewelry and pawn shop in Detroit. The homeowner’s wife was able to call 911 after being bound and assaulted by the suspects. DTE Energy has warned residents to ask for photo ID from any utility workers claiming to be from the company before allowing them into their homes. The incident has been described as a gruesome attack on an elderly couple in their home, with the prosecutor authorizing the highest charge of felony murder which carries a mandatory life without parole sentence. This case is still under investigation as law enforcement officials continue to search for the unidentified second suspect involved in the attack.
