Fenix FC, an all-transgender men’s soccer team in Spain named after the mythical bird symbolizing rebirth, has overcome administrative challenges and prejudice to achieve federated status in Europe. The team, based in Catalonia, is the first of its kind in Europe and plays in the fifth tier regional league.
The players faced discrimination and abuse when transitioning and trying to play in traditional men’s or women’s teams. These experiences led to the creation of Fenix FC, providing a safe space for transgender men to play soccer without fear of discrimination or violence.
The team is seen as more than just a soccer team by its players, who describe it as a family and a safe space to be themselves. The Catalan Football Association has mixed-gender leagues, allowing players of any gender to participate, and players can use a different name from their legal one if they choose.
Despite facing a 19-0 defeat in their first game, the focus for Fenix FC is on the importance of trans men having the right to play their favorite sport on equal terms. The team’s debut in the regional league marks a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and acceptance in soccer.
