First Lesbian Bar in Decades Opens in Boston as Dani’s Queer Bar

Dani’s Queer Bar, a new lesbian bar in Boston, opened last month, becoming the city’s first dedicated lesbian bar in decades. The bar, founded by Thais Rocha, aims to create a space for the Sapphic, trans, and non-binary community. The idea for the bar came after Rocha hosted parties for queer women in the city and launched a fundraising campaign in 2022.

The opening of Dani’s comes as part of a larger trend of a “lesbian bar renaissance” across the country, with more than a dozen bars for queer women opening since the height of the Covid pandemic. The bar received a SPACE grant from the Mayor’s Office, which helped bring the project to life. The grand opening was attended by many members of the LGBTQ community who expressed excitement and appreciation for having a space that caters specifically to queer women and trans and nonbinary individuals.

Before Dani’s, Boston had been without a dedicated lesbian bar for at least two decades, reflecting a larger national trend of the decline in lesbian bars since the 1980s. Despite this decline, there has been a recent resurgence in the opening of new spaces for queer women. These spaces are seen as crucial for providing community, shelter, and friendship for LGBTQ individuals.

The opening of Dani’s Queer Bar has been celebrated by members of the LGBTQ community, including long-time leaders in Boston’s lesbian scene. The bar’s location in the Back Bay neighborhood has provided a permanent space for LGBTQ patrons to gather and socialize. Overall, the opening of Dani’s represents progress for the LGBTQ community in terms of creating inclusive spaces for queer individuals in Boston and beyond.
