In Greece’s Corinthia region, a wildfire has devastated a large forested area, killing two people and injuring dozens. Hundreds of firefighters and volunteers, along with assistance from other EU countries, are working tirelessly to contain the blaze. The fire, which started much earlier than usual this year, has been one of the most difficult faced this season, with 41 wildfires breaking out across the country in the past 24 hours.
Residents in the region are desperate for relief as the destruction continues to spread. Antonis Kakavitsos, a local resident, likened the devastation to wildfires experienced in the year 2000. Greece, like other southern European countries, faces destructive wildfires every summer, exacerbated by global warming. This year has been particularly challenging, with over 4,500 wildfires occurring in the past few months.
The Greek fire service is facing the most dangerous season in two decades, with the countryside parched by a protracted drought and early summer heatwaves. Despite the challenges, firefighters are determined to contain the wildfires and prevent further loss of life and property.
As the battle against the Corinthia wildfire rages on, the international community continues to provide assistance to Greece in its time of need. With a united effort, the hope is to bring the fires under control and prevent further devastation in the region.
