Rachel Kyte, the UK’s new climate envoy, will retain her position on the board of a charity despite controversy surrounding her appointment. The Quadrature Climate Foundation, a charity founded by the owners of Quadrature Capital, a company with investments in fossil fuels, made a significant donation to the Labour party. However, Kyte had no involvement in the company’s investments or political donations.
Despite the concerns raised about potential conflicts of interest, Kyte has received support from prominent figures in the climate community who praise her expertise and qualifications for the role. She will continue to serve as a professor at Oxford University and maintain a few other external engagements.
Kyte’s appointment as special representative on climate at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office will require her to engage in high-level global diplomacy to address the climate crisis. Her appointment underwent full due diligence to ensure no conflicts of interest arise during her tenure.
The Quadrature Climate Foundation, where Kyte sits on the advisory board, operates independently from the investment company and focuses on funding science-led solutions to climate change. The foundation has committed significant funds to support sustainable development and climate solutions globally.
Kyte’s experience and leadership in the field of climate change have been recognized by the UK government, who view her as well-equipped to help with their commitments to mobilizing climate finance and addressing the climate crisis at a global level.
