Italian President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the strong relationship between Italy and Germany during a state visit to Berlin. He highlighted the importance of a united EU in facing international challenges and praised Germany as an essential partner. Speaking alongside German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Mattarella expressed concerns about the rise of political populism and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine without sacrificing dignity and international law.
During his visit, Mattarella met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss European issues. The presidents also planned to visit the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat in Bonn and attend a conference on cooperation in fighting climate change. The visit will culminate in a service in Italy commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Marzabotto massacre, where Waffen SS troops killed hundreds of Italian civilians during World War II. Mattarella expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to pay respects to the victims of this tragedy.
The Marzabotto massacre remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in Italy’s history and serves as a reminder of the atrocities committed during the war. Both presidents will attend the commemoration with humility, acknowledging the deep wounds left by the crimes of the SS and Wehrmacht in Italy. Mattarella’s visit to Germany and participation in this solemn event highlight the importance of remembering the past in shaping a peaceful future.
