The United States, European Union, and several other countries have called for an immediate 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah to allow for negotiations amid escalating conflict. The violence began after Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel, leading to cross-border attacks and deadly explosions in Lebanon. More than 600 people in Lebanon have been killed, and thousands have been displaced. The countries involved in the joint statement believe the situation is intolerable and poses a risk of broader regional escalation. The proposal aims to enable civilians on both sides to return home safely. The ceasefire was negotiated by the U.S., Australia, Canada, EU, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, and Qatar, but it is unclear how Israel and Hezbollah will respond. The broader goal of the ceasefire is to jump-start peace talks between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, where 97 people kidnapped by Hamas are still being held. Officials hope the ceasefire will lead to progress in resolving the situation in Gaza.
