UN Secretary General Expresses Serious Concern Over RSF Attack on el-Fasher in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grave concern over the full-scale assault on the city of el-Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan. Guterres called on the RSF commander to immediately halt the attacks to prevent further escalation and intercommunal conflict in the Darfur region. The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023 and has resulted in thousands of casualties and displacement of civilians.

The United States National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has stated that President Joe Biden will address the conflict during his meeting with United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sudan has accused the UAE of supporting the RSF, leading to clashes at the UN Security Council. The violence in el-Fasher has put hundreds of thousands of civilians at risk, particularly those in vulnerable populations and internally displaced persons.

The UN Security Council has called for an immediate halt to the fighting and de-escalation in and around el-Fasher. The International Criminal Court’s prosecutor has suggested that war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide may be occurring in Darfur. A UN fact-finding mission report has found evidence of attacks on civilians, including sexual violence, arbitrary arrest, and torture by both the Sudanese army and the RSF.

The situation in Sudan remains dire, with escalating violence and humanitarian consequences. The international community continues to call for peace and the protection of civilians in the conflict. The need for independent monitoring and accountability for violations of human rights in Sudan is critical to addressing the ongoing crisis.
