Sean “Diddy” Combs is facing charges of sex trafficking and racketeering and has been ordered to be held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal jail known for violence and abominable medical care. The facility has seen multiple fatal stabbings, including one caught on camera where an MS-13 gang member stabbed an inmate 44 times. Judges have refused to send nonviolent inmates there due to the dangerous conditions, including an incident where inmates were left without light or heat for a week during a cold snap. The Covid-19 pandemic worsened conditions, with inmates subjected to 24-hour lockdowns.
The facility has struggled to hire enough corrections officers, leading to increased violence and deadly attacks. Despite ongoing efforts by the Bureau of Prisons to address staffing challenges and other issues, the situation remains dire. Judges have condemned the conditions at the MDC, citing instances of catastrophic violence, neglect of medical care, and overcrowding. Inmates have suffered from medical neglect, including one case where a cancerous mass was left untreated for two months.
The MDC has become a dangerous and inhumane environment, with defense lawyers and judges calling for fewer detainees to be held there. Some inmates are being kept in segregation to protect them from the general population, but conditions remain horrid across the entire facility. Judges have expressed concern over the facility’s barbaric conditions and have made exceptions to keep defendants out of the MDC due to the extreme dangers posed by the facility.
