New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban resigned amidst a federal investigation into the department’s nightclub enforcement. Caban, the city’s first Latino police commissioner, took over in July 2023 and cited recent distractions as the reason for his resignation. Mayor Eric Adams appointed Thomas Donlon as the interim police commissioner. Caban’s phone was recently seized, and FBI agents raided the homes of top Adams administration officials in a separate probe. Caban’s twin brother, James Caban, who owns a nightclub security business, also had his phone seized in connection to a corruption investigation involving ties to the NYPD. Federal investigators are looking into whether James Caban profited from his connections to his brother and the NYPD. Edward Caban’s lawyers stated that he is not a target of the investigation and will cooperate fully with the government. In the past year, FBI agents have searched the homes of multiple city officials and advisers close to Adams as part of a separate investigation related to illegal campaign contributions. Adams has not been officially accused of any wrongdoing and has accepted Caban’s resignation, stating that it is the best decision at this time.
