Enhanced Security Measures Implemented for Congress During Jan. 6, 2025 Electoral Vote Count

Increased security measures will be in place for the certification of electoral votes at the Capitol in January, marking it as a national special security event. The Secret Service will oversee planning to prevent a repeat of the chaos that occurred during the certification four years ago when a mob stormed the Capitol. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser requested this designation, which will unlock federal, state, and local resources for security measures. A panel of representatives from various levels of law enforcement will work on planning in the coming weeks. The Secret Service cited reports from the former House Jan. 6 committee and the Government Accountability Office in implementing these enhanced security measures. The 2021 attack on the Capitol resulted in four deaths and assaults on about 140 police officers, as well as $1.5 million in damage to the building. This event will be treated with similar security measures as events like the State of the Union address and the Super Bowl to ensure the safety and security of participants.
