Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is calling on the UK and US to make “strong decisions” as he seeks permission to use long-range weapons deep inside Russia. Zelenskiy met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Kyiv to discuss this request. He emphasized the importance of their decisions in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelenskiy also stated that a “victory plan” he plans to present to President Joe Biden would strengthen Kyiv and potentially prompt Russia to end the war.
During the visit, Lammy announced over £600 million in support for Ukraine, including funding, loan guarantees, and military equipment. The UK government also pledged to provide additional air defense missiles, artillery ammunition, and armored vehicles to Ukraine by the end of the year.
Lammy and Blinken’s visit comes amidst escalating tensions, with three civilians killed in Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine. The Russian foreign ministry mentioned the possibility of collaborating with China in the face of aggression. In response, the UK reiterated calls for Russia to re-engage with the Forum for Security Cooperation and end its war in Ukraine.
Overall, Zelenskiy’s push for long-range weapons, alongside international support from the UK and US, reflects the ongoing efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s position against Russia’s aggression. The visit of high-level officials underscores the international community’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian threats.
