Verifying the accuracy of statements made during the presidential debate between Harris and Trump

In their first debate, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump exchanged barbs on various topics such as foreign policy, abortion, and guns. Trump promoted debunked conspiracy theories, while Harris made misleading statements about manufacturing jobs and the presence of U.S. troops in combat zones.

Trump falsely labeled Harris’ father as a Marxist, which was disputed by his former students who stated that he was not a Marxist. Another false claim by Trump was the assertion that the U.S. left $85 billion worth of military equipment in Afghanistan, when in reality the figure was much lower. He also inaccurately stated that Harris wants to confiscate guns.

Harris inaccurately claimed that no U.S. military members were in active duty in combat zones and that Trump oversaw manufacturing job losses. In addition, Trump falsely stated that the government was encouraging noncitizens to vote.

Furthermore, Trump made baseless claims about migrant crime and accused Harris of wanting to perform transgender operations on illegal aliens. He also spread false information about Democrats supporting execution after birth and alleged that pets were being harmed by migrants.

Finally, Trump misrepresented the inflation rate and claimed he had nothing to do with Project 2025. He also falsely stated that 21 million migrants were coming into the U.S. monthly and that his tax cuts would create a $5 trillion deficit.
