Harris and Trump both present at 9/11 ceremony shortly after first debate

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump showed civility by shaking hands at a 9/11 ceremony following their debate. The event was attended by President Joe Biden and former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg. During the ceremony, a woman criticized Biden for a flippant remark about 9/11. Biden and Harris attended to honor the lives lost on that tragic day. Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, visited first responders and a financial firm impacted by the attacks. Meanwhile, Harris and Biden traveled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania for another ceremony. Presidential candidates traditionally refrain from campaigning on the anniversary of 9/11, but they have attended memorial events in past election cycles. In 2020, Trump and Biden both attended the 9/11 memorial at ground zero, with Biden spending time consoling family members. Harris attended the New York memorial while Biden marked the anniversary in Alaska. In 2021, Biden visited all three attack sites, while Trump made stops at a police station and firehouse. Trump did not attend a memorial in 2021 but released a video statement commemorating the day. Both Trump and Biden have expressed their commitment to never forgetting the tragedy of 9/11.
