A devastating attack on a tent encampment for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza has left at least 40 people dead and 60 injured, according to Gaza’s Civil Defence. The attack, which targeted at least 20 tents in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, has been described as one of the most heinous massacres in the ongoing conflict.
Witnesses reported chaotic scenes in the area, with fires burning and Israeli reconnaissance planes circling overhead. Rescuers found craters up to 9 meters deep at the camp, making it difficult to retrieve the bodies of those killed in the attack.
Israeli authorities claimed they were targeting “significant Hamas terrorists” who were allegedly operating in a command and control center within the humanitarian zone in Khan Younis. However, Hamas denied that its fighters were present in the area and accused Israeli authorities of lying to justify their actions.
The Israel Foreign Ministry stated that precautions were taken to minimize civilian casualties, including the use of precise munitions and aerial surveillance. The statement also mentioned that the attack was in response to terrorist activities against Israeli troops.
The international community has condemned the attack, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The escalating violence in Gaza has led to a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of Palestinians displaced and in urgent need of assistance. Both sides are being urged to prioritize the protection of civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.
