Romania and Latvia, both NATO members and allies of Ukraine, have reported violations of their airspace by Russian drones since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Romania confirmed a Russian drone entered its airspace during nighttime attacks near the Danube River, while Latvia reported a drone crashing in its eastern territory. The Romanian Ministry of National Defence deployed F-16 fighter jets to monitor airspace and search for debris near the border. Both countries condemned the violations, with Latvia’s President noting the drone flew in from Belarus, a close ally of Russia.
NATO’s outgoing deputy secretary-general, Mircea Geoana, criticized Russia’s actions, calling them irresponsible and potentially dangerous. The incidents serve as a reminder of Russia’s aggressive actions beyond Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister. He called for concrete action from allies, including intercepting Russian missiles and drones and providing military aid to Ukrainian forces. Poland has also experienced violations of its airspace by Russian drones attacking Ukraine.
In response, Romanian lawmakers are considering legislation to allow the country to shoot down drones invading its airspace during peacetime. The repeated violations highlight the escalating tensions and security threats in the region, as Russia continues its aggressive actions in Ukraine and nearby territories. The international community is called upon to support Ukraine and take decisive measures to address the growing security concerns posed by Russian incursions into neighboring countries’ airspace.
