A high school student from South East High School in Los Angeles recently died after being injured during a junior varsity football game against Maywood Center for Enriched Studies on Aug. 23. The student’s name has not been released, and the cause of death was not specified. The school’s principal, Eric Jaimes, expressed sadness in a message to the school community and offered condolences and support during this difficult time. Crisis counselors are available for students who need additional support. The Los Angeles Unified School District did not confirm whether the death was related to football, and it is district policy that all football games have at least one medical personnel present.
The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury reported 16 fatalities among youth league, middle school, high school, and collegiate football players last year, with 13 directly or indirectly related to football. These included traumatic brain injuries, exertion, heatstroke, sudden cardiac arrest, and other medical issues. In a separate incident, a Florida high school football player also died after collapsing on the field during a game, but the cause of death has not been publicly released. These tragic events serve as reminders of the risks associated with sports, and the importance of prioritizing player safety and having medical personnel present during games.
