The White House has requested an investigation into the death of 26-year-old American woman, Aysenur Eygi, in the occupied West Bank. Eygi was participating in a protest against Israeli settlements when she was shot in the head by the IDF and died shortly after. The ISM confirmed that Eygi was the only non-Palestinian to be killed in Beita since 2020. Eygi was a psychology graduate and active in under-served communities. Turkish President Recep Erdogan condemned Israel’s actions, and the University of Washington mourned her death, calling for a ceasefire. Eygi’s death adds to the rising violence in the region, with at least two other American citizens killed in the West Bank since October 7. Israeli settlements have expanded rapidly, leading to increased settler violence against Palestinians. Human Rights Watch has reported instances of forced expulsion of Palestinians by armed settlers with the help of the IDF. Israeli forces have been carrying out deadly operations in the West Bank, resulting in many Palestinian deaths, including children. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has expressed concerns over the excessive use of force by Israeli forces in the territory. In 2022, an Israeli soldier fatally shot Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, but no one has been prosecuted for her death.
