Super Typhoon Yagi prompts evacuations and airport closures in Vietnam | Weather Update

Super Typhoon Yagi, described as one of the most powerful in the region in the past decade, made landfall in northern Vietnam, causing widespread destruction. With wind speeds exceeding 149 km/h, the typhoon uprooted trees, tossed ships and boats, and damaged power lines in coastal provinces such as Hai Phong and Quang Ninh.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered the evacuation of residents from dangerous areas before the storm hit, especially those prone to floods and landslides. The industrial hub of Hai Phong, home to large factories including EV maker VinFast and Apple supplier Pegatron, experienced metal roof sheets and commercial sign boards being blown away as the typhoon hit.

Tragically, two people lost their lives in Vietnam, with one man killed in Hai Duong province by a falling tree, and a woman in the capital, Hanoi, due to strong winds and heavy rains before the storm landed. The storm also caused disruptions to transportation, with four airports in northern Vietnam closed and sailing banned.

Yagi also brought devastation to southern China’s Hainan island, where it killed two people and injured 92 others, leading to the evacuation of around 460,000 people. The typhoon had previously claimed at least 21 lives in the Philippines when it was categorized as a tropical storm earlier in the week. The region is now working on recovery efforts to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the powerful storm.
