Why is Netanyahu adamant about Israeli control over the Gaza-Egypt crossing? | Israel-Palestine conflict updates

As the conflict between Israel and Gaza continues, the Philadelphi Corridor has become a crucial point of contention in ceasefire talks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on maintaining control of the corridor has stalled negotiations, with critics suggesting that this demand is more about prolonging the war than genuine security concerns. Some Israeli military figures have also criticized Netanyahu’s decision, warning of unnecessary risks.

Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict has faced criticism domestically, with calls for his resignation mounting. Despite this, Netanyahu is said to be focused on maintaining multiple conflicts to bolster his political position ahead of potential elections. The recent discovery of the bodies of six Israeli captives in Gaza has sparked protests in Israel and further eroded support for Netanyahu.

In addition to objections from Hamas, Egypt, which is mediating the ceasefire talks, opposes Israel’s military presence in the corridor due to violations of previous agreements and internal pressure from its pro-Palestinian population. However, Egypt has refrained from threatening to end its peace treaties with Israel, which date back to the Camp David Accords in 1979.

While Egypt has voiced concerns over Israel’s actions in the West Bank and Gaza, Netanyahu’s refusal to compromise on the Philadelphi Corridor issue remains a significant obstacle in reaching a ceasefire agreement. Despite criticism and pressure from various parties, including international bodies, Netanyahu shows no sign of backing down on this particular demand.
