Officials credit new panic alarm system for saving lives during shooting at Georgia high school; advocates push for nationwide implementation.

A panic alarm system was credited with saving lives during a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. Teachers wear ID badges with panic buttons that trigger alerts to law enforcement during emergencies. The system was just implemented a week before the shooting. The company, Centegix, advocates for Alyssa’s Law, which requires schools to install silent panic alarms linked directly to law enforcement. The legislation is named after Alyssa Alhadeff, a victim of the 2018 Parkland shooting. Two students and two teachers were killed in the incident at Apalachee High School.

The suspect, Colt Gray, had enrolled in the school recently and opened fire with an AR-style weapon, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The panic alarm system allowed law enforcement to respond quickly and take the suspect into custody within minutes. The suspect was investigated for making threats last year and has been charged with multiple counts of felony murder.

Lori Alhadeff, Alyssa’s mother, advocates for Alyssa’s Law, emphasizing the importance of reducing response time in emergencies to save lives. Since 2019, several states have passed the legislation to increase school safety. The tragic incident at Apalachee High School serves as a stark reminder of the need for effective emergency response measures in schools to prevent further casualties in similar situations.
