A team of ten birds of prey is helping to protect the Roman ruins of Pompeii from pesky pigeons. Gianna and Arya, along with their feathered companions, have been patrolling the archaeological park at least three times a week for the past two years. The closure of the park during the COVID lockdown in 2020 led to an increase in pigeon nesting, driving away other species and posing a risk to the ancient ruins with their corrosive guano.
