The United Nations has been forced to evacuate its humanitarian aid hub in the Gaza Strip for the second time since the start of the conflict due to new Israeli evacuation orders. This has disrupted aid operations in the region, with UN personnel being given only a few hours’ notice to vacate their offices and living spaces. The UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, stated that despite the challenges, they are doing what they can with the resources available to continue delivering aid to those in need.
The evacuation orders have affected 19 neighborhoods in the northern Gaza Strip and Deir el-Balah, with 15 premises where UN and NGO staff and their families lived being impacted. In addition, essential facilities such as warehouses for relief supplies, health facilities, and a hospital have also been affected, as well as emergency shelters for displaced people.
The International Rescue Committee has called for all parties to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian access amidst the ongoing conflict in the region. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with the UN determined to stay and continue delivering aid despite the challenges faced.
The conflict in Gaza began in October last year when Hamas fighters stormed Israeli communities, resulting in significant casualties and displacement. The humanitarian situation continues to worsen, with the need for aid and assistance in the region remaining critical.
