A recent poll conducted by Emerson College Polling and The Hill shows Vice President Kamala Harris holding a 10-point lead over former President Donald Trump in the race for president in New Mexico. In a two-way race, Harris leads Trump 52% to 42%, with some vulnerabilities for Democrats highlighted in the survey. When independent and third-party candidates are included, Harris’ lead over Trump expands to 11 points. The poll also revealed that 53% of respondents have a favorable opinion of Harris, while 57% view Trump unfavorably.
The poll also asked respondents about the most important issues facing New Mexico, with the economy, crime, and immigration being the top concerns. Voters who prioritize these issues tend to favor Trump. On the other hand, those focused on education, health care, housing affordability, threats to democracy, and abortion lean towards Harris.
In addition to the presidential race, the poll showed Democrats leading in New Mexico’s congressional races. Sen. Martin Heinrich is ahead of Republican Nella Domenici in his bid for a third term, and U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez is favored over former Rep. Yvette Herrell in the 2nd Congressional District. Democrats also hold wide leads in the 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts.
The survey also revealed that a majority of respondents are not satisfied with the job performance of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, particularly in relation to crime. Despite ongoing efforts to address public safety concerns, the poll found that many voters feel less safe in New Mexico compared to five years ago.
Overall, the poll included 965 registered New Mexico voters and had a margin of error of 3.1%. The results provide insights into the upcoming election and the key issues on voters’ minds.
