Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott led his team to a surprising 35-31 road victory over FBS opponent New Mexico in a Week 0 matchup. Despite being an FCS program, the Bobcats were 13 1/2-point favorites and proved the oddsmakers right with a thrilling come-from-behind win.
Coach Brent Vigen earned his first victory over an FBS program in his fourth season with Montana State, as his team rallied from a 31-14 deficit in the fourth quarter to outscore the Lobos 21-0 in the final frame. Running back Scottre Humphrey’s four-yard touchdown run with 10 seconds left sealed the victory for the Bobcats.
Quarterback Mellott had a solid game, passing for 205 yards and orchestrating a game-winning 89-yard drive in the final minutes. The Bobcats’ rushing attack was also impressive, with Adam Jones and Humphrey combining for 307 yards on the ground.
Despite the loss, new New Mexico coach Bronco Mendenhall saw some positives in his team’s performance, including two defensive touchdowns. Quarterback Devon Dampier threw for 173 yards and a touchdown, and the Lobos showed promise on offense with Eli Sanders and Luke Wysong making significant contributions.
Montana State will look to build on this momentum as they face Utah Tech next week, while New Mexico will try to bounce back against No. 21 Arizona. This victory sets the tone for an exciting season ahead for the Bobcats as they aim to make a deep run in the FCS playoffs.
