Meeting Held in Clovis by NM Agencies to Provide Information on Future PFAS Blood Testing

New Mexico state environmental, health, and veterans agencies are holding a public meeting in Clovis tonight at 6 p.m. to discuss free blood testing for “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. These manmade chemicals have been linked to various health issues, including decreased fertility, developmental delays, certain cancers, and hormone interference.

The testing is in response to contamination of groundwater and wells near Cannon Air Force Base, which has affected residents in south-central Curry County. The blood testing will be conducted from September 12 to 18 and again from October 3 to 9, and will test for 33 types of PFAS. Residents within the designated area are eligible for the free and confidential testing, and results will be available three to four months after the appointment.

State officials emphasized the importance of residents being aware of their contamination levels and consulting with healthcare providers on managing potential effects. Family health history may also play a role in determining whether further tests are needed.

The agencies hosting the testing will provide participants with a $25 physical gift card after completing the appointment. EPCOR Water Utility has reported that the level of PFAS in Clovis’ drinking water is safe, providing some reassurance to residents.

This initiative aims to give residents peace of mind about potential PFAS exposure and provide support in managing any health concerns that may arise. Throughout the testing period, officials will continue to monitor the situation and may expand eligibility for testing if necessary.
