A Rio Rancho family is bidding farewell to New Mexico after a terrifying road rage incident resulted in a woman being hospitalized. Katrina and Gregory Mitchell shared their harrowing experience with KOB 4, emphasizing their disappointment with the state’s justice system. The Mitchells were involved in a road rage incident last April, where a minor physical altercation ensued after a merge incident with another vehicle. The situation escalated at a red light, leading to a brawl, during which Katrina was severely beaten and left with a concussion and swollen eyes. Subsequently, charges were filed against all parties involved, with the teen driver receiving a guilty verdict in juvenile court, and Katrina accepting a plea deal. However, no jail time was given, and the charges were downgraded to misdemeanors. Feeling let down by the justice system, the Mitchell family received intervention from the U.S. Air Force, which offered a relocation to California under a threatened person’s assignment for their safety and well-being. Despite the physical and emotional scars left by the incident, the Mitchells are grateful for the opportunity to start fresh and heal. The family hopes that their story will shed light on the flaws in the New Mexico justice system and inspire change for a safer community.
