Serbia’s Farmers Urge Government Intervention in Response to Severe Drought and Early Harvests

The provincial Government of Serbia is facing criticism from farmers as they struggle to deal with the devastating effects of a severe drought for the third consecutive year. Farmers in the region have been forced to start their sunflower and corn harvests much earlier than usual, with corn output expected to be three times lower than normal.

The drought has not only stunted crop growth but also brought pests that are further damaging the already scarce crops. Many residents have wells that have run dry, leaving them dependent on rain for their crops. Some farmers are even selling off machinery or land to pay off debts due to the lack of irrigation options.

Farmers are demanding immediate government intervention to help alleviate the crisis, with calls for emergency declarations, financial aid, and infrastructure investment growing louder. Despite pleas for help, the Subotica municipality has not responded to requests to declare a natural disaster due to the drought.

On the other hand, the provincial Government claims that it is taking steps to prevent desertification in the area by investing in the regional hydrological system. However, with farmers struggling to make ends meet and the livelihoods of many at risk, the urgency for assistance from the government is increasing.

As Serbia faces this environmental and economic crisis, it is clear that without significant intervention, the future of many farmers in the region remains uncertain. The call for support and action from the government is crucial in preventing further devastation to the agricultural sector in Serbia.
