Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh marked the seventh anniversary of their exodus from Myanmar with rallies in Cox’s Bazar. Demanding an end to violence and their safe return to Myanmar, refugees from all ages held placards and chanted slogans, wearing ribbons bearing “Rohingya Genocide Remembrance”. The Rohingya have faced discrimination and violence in Myanmar, with hundreds of thousands fleeing in 2017 due to a military crackdown now being investigated for genocide. Recent fighting in Rakhine state has led to an influx of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh, with reports of conflict-related injuries. UNICEF has raised alarms over the situation, particularly concerning children caught in the crossfire. The need to protect civilians in Myanmar and provide access to medical care has been emphasized. Rohingya refugees expressed a desire to return to their homeland with rights and peaceful coexistence with other ethnic communities. Bangladesh’s interim foreign minister called for other countries, such as India, to do more to address the crisis, and for international pressure on the Arakan Army to stop attacking Rohingya in Rakhine state. MSF highlighted the importance of protecting civilians and providing medical care in the conflict. As Rohingya continue to seek refuge and stability, the international community is urged to take action to ensure their safety and well-being.
