Hurricane Hone is expected to bring heavy rainfall and damaging winds to Hawaii’s Big Island as it passes south of it early Sunday morning as a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Hawaii County, and residents could see 6 to 12 inches of rain, leading to possible flooding. “Life-threatening” surf is also expected on the island. The island, including Hilo and Waimea, is under flash flood warnings until 6:15 a.m. local time. Social media videos show trees shaking in the wind amid heavy downpour. The hurricane was located about 115 miles south-southwest of Hilo Sunday morning with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and moving west at 10 mph, expected to continue Monday with a slight decrease in forward speed thereafter. Over 9,600 utility customers were without power on Hawaii’s Big Island as of Sunday morning.
