Mediators of Sudan conflict welcome new commitments on improving humanitarian access

Countries involved in mediating talks to end the war in Sudan have applauded decisions made by the warring sides to facilitate humanitarian relief efforts in the country. The sponsors of the talks, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Nations, commended the commitment of the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces to cooperate in delivering aid to Darfur and Kordofan states. They called for full and unhindered access for humanitarian partners to ensure the efficient operation of aid corridors.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which began last year, has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with more than 25 million people facing acute hunger. The recent opening of the Adre border crossing into North Darfur and the announcement by the RSF to facilitate humanitarian convoys are seen as crucial steps in addressing the famine and humanitarian needs in the region.

However, the situation in Sudan remains dire, with reports of attacks by the RSF resulting in the deaths of civilians. The United States has emphasized the importance of ending the fighting and alleviating the suffering in Sudan, urging the Sudanese Armed Forces to join the negotiations in Geneva. The US remains committed to saving lives in Sudan and working towards peace in the region.

Efforts to establish civilian and democratic rule in Sudan following the ousting of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir have faced challenges, including a military coup and ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF. Despite diplomatic efforts to improve relations between Sudan and the US, the situation in the country remains unstable, with humanitarian needs growing as the conflict persists.
