Female athletes dominated at the Olympics

The 2024 Paris Olympics were a historic event for women as they achieved gender parity for the first time in Olympic history. U.S. women athletes shone on the world stage, winning a record-breaking 67 medals out of Team USA’s 126 total. This would have put them in third place overall if they were their own country, behind the U.S. and China. Notable achievements included Katie Ledecky becoming the most decorated female Olympic swimmer, Simone Biles leading the “Golden Girls” gymnastics team to gold, and Amit Elor becoming the youngest U.S. wrestler to win gold. However, there was also backlash against Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei, whose gender was falsely called into question, leading to online harassment. Khelif filed a legal complaint alleging cyber-harassment. Despite this, she went on to win a gold medal and was named the flag bearer for Algeria during the closing ceremony. The International Olympic Committee denounced the misinformation and supported Khelif, highlighting the challenges and triumphs faced by women athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
