High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has condemned the recent Israeli strike on a school in Gaza which resulted in the death of over 100 individuals. Borrell expressed deep concern over the images of the school hit by the strike and stated that there is no justification for such massacres. He emphasized that a ceasefire is the only way to prevent the killing of civilians in the region.
Borrell also voiced support for the ceasefire talks called for by leaders from the US, Egypt, and Qatar, as well as a deal for the release of hostages. He criticized Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich for opposing a ceasefire and highlighted the high number of Palestinian casualties since the conflict began.
The Israeli airstrike targeted a school-turned-shelter in central Gaza, causing significant casualties, including women, children, and the elderly. The strike reportedly occurred during morning prayers, resulting in a tragic loss of life. While Israel claimed the school housed a Hamas command center, a top Hamas official denied these allegations.
The school, like many others in Gaza, had been serving as a shelter for those displaced by the ongoing conflict. Borrell’s condemnation of the strike underscores the urgency of reaching a ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties in the region.
