Turkey seeks to participate in South Africa’s ICJ genocide case against Israel

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Turkey will formally submit its declaration of intervention in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel over the war in Gaza at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague. The submission is expected on Wednesday.

Turkey had decided to join the case in May and had been preparing the necessary legal documents. The ICJ had previously ordered Israel to refrain from genocidal acts against Palestinians after South Africa accused Israel of state-led genocide in Gaza.

South Africa brought the case against Israel in December, accusing them of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention. The death toll from Israel’s war in Gaza has reached nearly 40,000. Israel and its allies have called the allegations baseless, and a final ruling in the case may take years.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had announced in January that Turkey was providing documents for the case at the ICJ. Thirteen countries have joined or intend to join South Africa’s case against Israel. The ICJ may allow states to intervene in cases and provide their views.

The submission of Turkey’s declaration of intervention on Wednesday marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battle between South Africa and Israel at the ICJ. The case highlights the continued tensions in the region and the complex legal issues surrounding allegations of genocide.
