Suni Lee won a bronze medal in the uneven bars final at the Tokyo Olympics, defending her podium finish from the all-around competition. Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour took home the gold medal, while China’s Qiu Qiyuan received the silver. Lee, the only American in the final, benefited from performing last and executed a slightly more conservative routine, earning a score of 14.800.
Lee had specific goals for the Olympics, including a team gold medal, all-around podium finish, bars medal, and gold on the balance beam. She has already achieved most of these goals, with only the beam final remaining. Despite facing setbacks due to a kidney disease last year, Lee has exceeded her expectations in Paris.
Nemour, representing Algeria, earned her country’s first Olympic gymnastics medal with her bars gold. She is a former member of the French team but switched nationalities due to conflicts with the federation. Her high score of 15.700 in the final highlighted the French team’s missed opportunity, as they failed to qualify for any finals in their home Olympics.
Next, Lee and Simone Biles will compete for a beam medal on the final day of gymnastics in Paris. Despite initial challenges and unexpected outcomes, both gymnasts have proven themselves as top contenders in the sport.
