Award-winning author and journalist Ian McMillan recently shared some of his favourite things in an interview. When asked about his ideal sandwich, he described a comfort food option – a toasted sandwich with buttered “plastic white bread,” Shropshire Red cheese, and jalapeños. He explained that a toasted sandwich is his go-to when he can’t decide what to eat.
McMillan also revealed his least favourite phrase, “bus replacement service,” and expressed admiration for all birds, particularly defending seagulls who he feels are a reflection of human wastefulness. He shared a heartwarming story about cuckoos bringing spring to his village.
The author also dished on controversial pop culture opinions, stating that abstract art is rubbish. When asked about advice he’s received, he humorously mentioned the wisdom of not wearing anything diagonal as you get older.
McMillan mentioned binging TV shows like House of the Dragon, Better Call Saul, and The Sopranos, while confessing that watching TV can lead to distractions from writing.
He spoke fondly of Ted Hughes’ book Poetry in the Making, which he rereads for inspiration. When asked about the choice between dying at the bottom of the ocean or in space, he quipped that he’s not planning on dying and would want to live forever if given the option.
In a humorous touch, McMillan mentioned that he would choose Cate Blanchett to play him in a biopic, with Emma Stone portraying him in his younger years. He also discussed his fear of horses and his affinity for swifts, birds that rarely touch the ground. Through his candid and light-hearted responses, McMillan provided insight into his quirky personality and unique perspectives.
