Russia launched a massive aerial barrage on Ukraine, with the attack mainly targeting Kyiv. Ukraine’s air force managed to shoot down all 89 drones and one missile launched by Russia, with no casualties reported but some damage to buildings. This was the seventh drone attack on the city in July, prompting thousands of residents to seek shelter in metro stations. Russia claims to target military and energy facilities but attacks on residential areas are frequent, with Ukraine accusing Russia of targeting civilians.
Meanwhile, Russia has begun the third stage of drills to practise the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons, with ally Belarus joining in the previous stage. President Vladimir Putin has warned of using nuclear weapons to defend Russia and criticized the US and its European allies for supporting Ukraine with weapons. Russia considers a German ammunition factory being built in Ukraine as a potential target. In retaliation, Ukraine’s military struck a weapons and military equipment storage facility in Russia’s Kursk region. Air defences in Kursk destroyed four Ukrainian missiles over two districts.
The situation between Russia and Ukraine remains tense, with ongoing military clashes and threats of nuclear confrontation. Both sides continue to accuse each other of aggression and targeting civilians, leading to growing concerns about the escalation of the conflict.
