Local Sports: Carranza from Wildcats Commits to Play Softball at New Mexico State University

Recent Brawley High graduate Tamara Carranza has secured a full scholarship to play softball at NCAA Division I New Mexico State University. Carranza, a four-time All Imperial Valley League shortstop, signed her National Letter of Intent in December 2023. She credits her success to hard work and dedication to the sport, as well as maintaining a 4.0 GPA and playing travel softball with the Firecrackers Brashear Organization.

Carranza’s scholarship relieved internal pressure but raised external expectations for her senior season. She led the team with eight home runs and was named Co-MVP, proving she could handle the pressure. Carranza’s success has also been influenced by her commitment to academics, as grades were a top priority for her and her family.

She will be the fourth sibling to attend New Mexico State, following in the footsteps of her older siblings who also played sports at the university. Carranza has a familiar connection to the campus and is excited to major in criminal justice while continuing her softball career.

Brawley coach Kevin Kerns has high praise for Carranza, describing her as a phenomenal athlete and a dedicated individual who will excel at the collegiate level. With a strong support system and a successful high school career behind her, Carranza is prepared for the next chapter in her softball journey at New Mexico State University.
