A global tech outage caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has resulted in over 1,100 flight cancellations and nearly 3,000 delays in the U.S., impacting both private and public sector industries. The outage, which began on Friday, has caused chaos in airline, banking, and hospital systems worldwide.
Chicago’s airports were hit hard by the tech outage, with over 135 flights canceled at O’Hare and minimal delays at Midway. The issue has also affected 8.5 million Windows devices, sparking widespread disruptions.
While some businesses have recovered, the problem has not yet been fully resolved. Multiple U.S. government facilities have reported being unable to operate due to disruptions in Microsoft 360 applications. Election-related systems in several states have also been impacted.
Major airlines like American, United, and Delta issued a global ground stop on Friday, but Delta continues to be the most affected by the outage. Emergency 911 systems have switched to backup systems, and hospital systems like Mass General Brigham are working to restore full operations.
CrowdStrike is actively working with impacted customers to address the issue, and authorities are trying to reboot systems to mitigate the impacts. Despite the challenges, some businesses and agencies have managed to recover, with American Airlines reporting less than 1% of flights being canceled on Saturday. The situation is still evolving, and efforts are ongoing to fully resolve the tech outage.
